...Al segle XVIII els labradors alacantins cel·lebraven el dia més llarg i la nit més curta de l'any per a les recol·lecció de les collites i la destrucció dels mals. Aquesta tradició aviat es va estendre a tota la ciutat d'Alacant però l'alcalde ho va prohibir a un bàndol al qual es deia que no s'encengueren fogueres ni es dispararen coets en la Nit de Sant Joan (24 Juny). Però al 1881, amb una distracció de l'ajuntament que no va publicar cap bàndol, els veïns d'Alacant es van agrupar per fer festes als carrers, en les quals hi havia jocs, coets, fogueres i música. Aquell any van començar a crear-se els primers "ninots" que figuraven a alguna persona a la qual es la criticava...
